What is Search Engine Advertising?

Search engine advertising is also known as Pay Per Click (“PPC”) advertising.  This is different to Search Engine Optimization (SEO), the process of improving your website so it appears higher in search engines like Google.

PPC involves bidding to appear in the paid ‘advertising’ section of the search engine results page alongside (or above) the usual results. You pay every time someone clicks on your ad (hence the term Pay Per Click).

How does PPC work?

A business will create a text ad to appear for a specific search term (keyword/term); if you advertise under several terms you may have different text in each ad.  For example, a computer retailer will probably have different ads for the terms “Home PC” and “Business PC” to appeal to different audience types.  The Home PC ad may read, “Run the latest games and photo software with our PC systems”.  While a Business PC keyword ad may read, “Offering reliable discount network PCs with extended support.”

Some businesses advertise a few terms, while others advertise under thousands.  The obvious factors are a company’s budget, and effectiveness as to bottom line profits.  If you are paying for people to go to your site but they can’t buy your products or do anything that makes you money then it won’t actually help your profit!
